Baiyansi is a granite rock formation about 25km away from Shigu. The main face is around 550m high. There are two finished routes - "It's Just a Ride" (5.10b, 350m, 12 pitches) and "Allegory of the caves" (5.11c, 540m, 17 pitches).

Both of these routes were developed by Dane Schellenberg and Ryder Stroud in a ground up ascent. They have mixed protection and require a single rack of cams from #0.2 to #4. The rock has all kinds of features not usually found on granite which makes the climbing really fun and varied. They put weeks of effort into developing the lines, putting bolts where needed, removing loose rock and scrubbing off the lichen. Given the remoteness of the wall, they wanted to make the routes as safe as possible, and the work they put it in is clearly evident.

There is also a 7 pitch route developed by Woody Jacobson and Kit Kercheval. They hope to continue the route to the top of the free standing tower which can be seen in the photo below. The giant granite rock of Baiyansi near Shigu, Yunnan China. Approaching the top of the route It's Just a Ride.

There is loads more info and a free guide available on Ryder's website.

Transport and approach

A taxi from the village costs 150rmb each way. This price reflects the total distance driving - almost 50km there and back - as well as the final 6km on very rough dirt road.

From the drop off it's around 45 minutes hike.
